Traveling to the lake of Toma, in the Gotthard massif, which is the source of the Rhine river waters the leading by Germany and the Netherlands, followed by the pass Lucendro, the point of origin of the Reuss (which subsequently flows into the Rhine), then the pass Nufenen, the birthplace of the Ticino river (flowing after the Po in Italy), to complete the Rhone Glacier, the source of the river of the same name which pours its water towards France. The trail leads the Four Fountains in five stages rather demanding high mountain landscapes, bogs, alpine meadows and sinkholes, and about marmots, chamois and Alpine jackdaws.
Each of the sources deserves a day of dedication and its route is connected with public transport in both the starting point and on arrival. And thanks to the possibilities of accommodation in the area, the tour can be used as an adventurous trip for five days.
