In the past, the city served as capital of the state, one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia. The ruins of the once magnificent city now invite international tourism to retrace his steps and remember years old glories.
The city, a demonstration of great ingenuity and practicality architectural, has designed several buildings, almost entirely, by King Parakramabahu the Great. He was one of the last kings warriors who had potential to grow the city in large proportions, being also responsible for the artificial lake in the west, known as the Sea of Parakrama.
Polonnaruwa lies 142 kilometers from Colombo harbor and knew many of the Sinhalese kings between XI XIII centuries. The extension of the city, which comes to occupy 122 hectares, is full of buildings and monuments of Hindu style. Few people can see belong to civil, being mostly religious buildings.
The current complex of Polonnaruwa is what remains of the former Royal Palace and the Board of Directors, and despite the ruinous state (which is strictly conserved), the city suggests grandeur yesteryear.
Another building beautifully decorated house includes relics (Vatadage) consisting of a circular stone structure with elegant decorations and symbols and carvings in stone.
